David Nyerhowo Akwara is a multiple award winning and passionate filmmaker, strategic and highly effective at executing projects. David is a visionary that is attracted to meaningful work that will outlive him and make a mark on the World. David’s love for story telling started when he was young, this passion led him to forfeit his studies in the legal profession to pursue his passion instead. With the knowledge of how hard the film industry is, David decided to position himself to be able to make a living out of it. David went on to join the Film and Broadcast Academy in Ozoro, Delta state where he studied Film and TV Production. As a dedicated filmmaker he decided to further his education in Ghana by joining The Academy of Film and Acting where he studied film Directing. From humble beginnings, screening his first movie in his bedroom with his family cheering him on, David has gone on to achieve a number of milestones in his career. After building his experience with Director Steve Akpesiri, he went on to create his own production company called Corner Street where he directed movies such as The Week Before October which was screened at the 2014 Kenyan International Film Festival under the student Short Film category. His film Impales received 20 official selections around the world and two awards in 2017 and2018 namely: Indie Wise Convention USA Award and the Mtn Shortz Award. He founded David Akwara Films when he found his calling: Telling African Stories from a Place of Strength. Committed to his vision and propelled by the launch of the free trade area in Africa, David embarked on his most ambitious project yet: making the AfCFTA accessible to those that will benefit from it the most, such as SMEs and the youth. In 2020 David won a Community Service Award and was added to the list of 100 Most Influential Young Deltans. When he is not producing creative content or contributing to the community, David can be found reading books, playing sports, enjoying musical instruments, and spending time with family.
